C/LtCol Cleveland Brown Participates in Service Academy Summer Programs

C/Lt Col Cleveland Brown Jr, Red Bird Composite Squadron, Civil Air PatrolC/Lt. Col Cleveland E. Brown, Jr., the cadet commander of Civil Air Patrol Redbird Composite Squadron, participated in the 2020 summer programs at the United States Naval Academy and the United States Coast Guard Academy. Brown is a rising senior at Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington.

Summer seminar programs at the service academies are highly competitive and offer outstanding high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn more each academy. Brown completed the Naval Academy summer session in June and will attend the Coast Guard AIM session later this month. Due to the national COVID-19 crisis, he is not able to experience on-campus exposure at either academy.

“The virtual courses provided by the Naval Academy were informational and provided me a unique insight into all the benefits and rewards of the military academy. I’m looking forward to the Coast Guard program, too. I haven’t decided yet which academy I want to attend after graduation, but I know that attending either the Naval Academy or the Coast Guard Academy will greatly benefit my desire to pursue a career in aviation,” Brown said.

The one-week sessions for both programs were reduced to three days. Yet, the sessions were designed to provide potential cadets with similar rigorous physical fitness and lectures in the proud tradition of the service academies.

Brown has been a Civil Air Patrol cadet since 2017. He has been cadet commander since 2019. In school, he is a member of the National Honor Society and National Math Society, and was an Academic All-State honoree. He has played on the Grace Prep basketball, varsity track, and varsity tennis teams for two years. He also plays the violin and piano and is actively pursuing his private pilot's license. He is active in a youth program at his church, Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. In 2019, he won a scholarship from the Blue Sky Foundation to attend the EAA advanced summer camp held in Oshkosh, Wis., which provides ground instruction and introductory flight experiences for aspiring pilots.
